2026 Hurricane Season Roof Prep Checklist for South Louisiana Homeowners
Hurricane season opened June 1 and runs through November 30. If you have not looked at your roof since last season, now is the time - before a named storm is in the Gulf and you are scrambling along with every other homeowner in Acadiana.
This checklist covers what to inspect, what to fix, and what decisions to make now while you still have time to do it right.
Start From the Ground
You do not need to get on your roof to do a first pass. Walk around your home and look up from ground level.
What you are looking for:
- Shingles that are visibly curled at the edges or corners
- Dark patches where granules have worn off, exposing the asphalt mat underneath
- Shingles that are cracked, missing, or sitting at an angle
- Sagging areas along the roofline
- Gutters with an unusual amount of granule buildup - this material came off your shingles, which means the shingles are losing protective material
If you spot any of these from the ground, the situation is worse up close. Flag them and proceed to the next steps.
Clean Your Gutters Before You Inspect Anything Else
Clogged gutters cause water to back up under your shingles during heavy rain. South Louisiana does not get gentle hurricane rainfall - storms push water sideways and upward. A backed-up gutter in that condition becomes a direct path for water intrusion.
Clean your gutters completely. While you are at it, check that downspouts are directing water at least four feet away from your foundation. If water pools against your home during heavy rain, you have a drainage problem that will be compounded by storm conditions.
Inspect Flashing at Every Penetration Point
Flashing is the metal material that seals the joints between your roof and everything that penetrates it - chimneys, vents, skylights, HVAC equipment, and roof-to-wall transitions. Flashing failures are one of the most common causes of storm-related water intrusion because the seals degrade over time and pull away from the surface.
Look for:
- Visible gaps between the flashing and the chimney or vent
- Rust staining running down from the flashing
- Lifted or separated edges where the flashing meets the shingle surface
- Missing caulk or sealant at seams
These are repair items, not replacement items. A roofing professional can reseal flashing in a single visit. Do not leave it for after the storm.
Know How Old Your Roof Is
Asphalt shingles in South Louisiana age faster than the manufacturer's rated lifespan suggests. Our heat, humidity, and storm cycle degrade shingles faster than shingles in a cooler, drier climate. A 30-year shingle in Louisiana may perform more like a 20-year shingle under real-world conditions.
If your roof is:
- Under 10 years old - you are in good shape assuming no visible damage. Focus on flashing and gutters.
- 10 to 15 years old - have it professionally inspected. This is the range where problems develop beneath the surface that are not visible from the ground.
- Over 15 years old - a professional inspection is essential before hurricane season. You need to know whether you are maintaining a sound roof or spending money on a roof that is approaching end of life.
Get a Professional Roof Inspection
A professional inspection covers what a ground-level visual cannot. A certified inspector will walk the roof surface, probe suspect areas, check the decking beneath the shingles, inspect the attic for signs of water intrusion and inadequate ventilation, and give you a written assessment of current condition and expected remaining life.
This matters for two reasons. First, it tells you whether your roof will hold up through this season or whether you are taking on significant risk. Second, if you do experience storm damage this season, a pre-storm inspection report is documentation that proves the damage occurred during the storm and not due to pre-existing neglect - which matters when your insurance claim is reviewed.
Acadiana Roof Restoration performs free roof assessments across South Louisiana, Monday through Saturday. Our assessments are conducted by a NRCIA Forensic Roof Inspector and cover current condition, remaining life estimate, FORTIFIED eligibility, Roof Maxx candidacy, and LFHP grant eligibility. Understand the Roof Maxx Option for Aging Shingles
If your professional roof inspection shows that the shingles are structurally sound but aging - losing flexibility, showing granule loss, or past the midpoint of their rated life - Roof Maxx is worth understanding before hurricane season.
Roof Maxx is a USDA-certified bio-based oil treatment applied directly to existing asphalt shingles. As shingles age, they lose the natural oils that keep them flexible and resistant to impact and water. Roof Maxx restores that flexibility. A single treatment can add up to 5 years of life to your roof and can be reapplied up to three times, for up to 15 years of total extended life.
The cost is approximately 20-25% of total replacement cost including all prep work. The treatment takes 2-4 hours and you do not need to leave your home during application.
Acadiana Roof Restoration is the authorized Roof Maxx 5-Star Dealer for Acadiana and South Louisiana. If your roof qualifies, a Roof Maxx treatment before hurricane season is a way to get more life out of a sound roof without the cost and disruption of a full replacement. Call 337-999-7663 to find out if your roof is a candidate.
Understand the FORTIFIED Option if You Are Already Planning a Replacement
If a replacement is on the horizon - whether your inspector recommends it or you have been planning one - hurricane season is the right time to upgrade to an IBHS FORTIFIED roof rather than a standard replacement.
A FORTIFIED roof is built to the IBHS (Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety) FORTIFIED standard, which significantly exceeds Louisiana's building code in wind resistance. The requirements include a sealed roof deck, reinforced eaves, ring-shank nails, and a verified installation confirmed by an independent third-party inspector.
Why this matters right now: Louisiana's FORTIFIED Homes Program (LFHP) provides grants of up to $10,000 for qualifying homeowners upgrading to a FORTIFIED roof. The current lottery registration period has a deadline of June 19. If a replacement is in your future, registering before that deadline could significantly reduce your out-of-pocket cost.
Beyond the LFHP grant, FORTIFIED designation qualifies you for mandatory insurance discounts under Louisiana Act 533. Carriers including Liberty Mutual/Safeco, USAA, State Farm, and Allstate are required to offer discounts up to specific percentages with select carriers. These discounts apply annually for the 5-year life of the designation and can offset the cost of the upgrade over time.
Acadiana Roof Restoration is an IBHS FORTIFIED Certified Contractor and an approved LFHP contractor. Call 337-999-7663 to schedule a free FORTIFIED assessment.
The Checklist Summary
Before the next named storm enters the Gulf:
- Walk your property and look for visible shingle damage from ground level
- Clean your gutters and check downspout drainage
- Inspect all flashing at chimneys, vents, and wall transitions
- Know your roof's age and act accordingly
- Schedule a professional inspection if your roof is 10 years or older
- If shingles are aging but structurally sound, ask about Roof Maxx
- If replacement is coming, register for the LFHP grant before June 19 and ask about FORTIFIED
None of these steps take long. The inspection is free. The decisions you make now are significantly easier - and less expensive - than the ones you will make after a storm.
