If you own a home in Lafayette Parish and you have not heard about the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program yet, pay close attention. The state of Louisiana just made its biggest investment in FORTIFIED roofing in history and your parish was added to the eligible list for the first time.
Here is what happened and what it means for your home.
Louisiana Just Poured $50 Million Into FORTIFIED Roof Grants
In May 2026, Governor Jeff Landry signed legislation injecting over $50 million in new funding into the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program. On top of that, the state budget added another $30 million for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
That is more than $80 million going toward helping Louisiana homeowners upgrade their roofs to IBHS FORTIFIED standards.
The program awards $10,000 grants through a lottery system. Prior rounds have included thousands of grants. Future rounds will be announced by the LDI.
And here is the headline: Lafayette Parish was added as newly eligible in 2026.
If you live in Lafayette, Youngsville, Broussard, Carencro, Duson, Scott, or anywhere in Lafayette Parish, you are now eligible to enter the lottery for a $10,000 grant to upgrade your roof.
What Is a FORTIFIED Roof and Why Does It Matter?
A FORTIFIED roof is not just a regular roof replacement. It is built to a higher standard developed by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) specifically to withstand the kind of storms that hit South Louisiana every year.
A FORTIFIED roof includes three key upgrades your standard replacement does not have:
A sealed roof deck that keeps water out even if shingles are damaged in a storm.
Enhanced deck attachment with more fasteners and a tighter nailing pattern.
Reinforced roof edges and drip edge installation that prevents wind from lifting the entire roofing system.
The result is a roof that does not just look good. It holds together when a Category 3 comes through.
The Insurance Math Makes This a No-Brainer
Louisiana insurers are now required by law to offer premium discounts for FORTIFIED homes. Under Louisiana Regulation 136, taking effect for policies issued January 1, 2027, the minimum required discount is 29% on the wind portion of your premium. FORTIFIED Gold qualifies for up to 49%.
For the average Louisiana homeowner paying $3,500 to $6,000 per year in property insurance, a 29% wind discount adds up fast.
Add the $10,000 grant. Add the Louisiana FORTIFIED Roof Tax Credit of up to $10,000 for qualifying installations. Most homeowners who run the math see a full financial payback within 2 to 3 years.
After that, the discount keeps coming every single year.
Why You Need a Certified Contractor
Here is the detail that trips up most homeowners.
You cannot use just any roofer for a FORTIFIED installation. The work must be performed by a contractor who has completed IBHS-required training and is certified to participate in the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program.
After the installation, a separate independent IBHS-certified evaluator inspects every aspect of the job before the designation is issued. The evaluator is not from your roofing company. They are a third party hired specifically to confirm the installation meets every standard.
This means your results cannot be faked. Either your roof passes or it does not.
Acadiana Roof Restoration is the only IBHS-certified FORTIFIED roofing contractor in the Acadiana region. We have managed the full certification process for homeowners across Lafayette Parish, St. Martin Parish, St. Landry Parish, and beyond. We handle everything from the initial assessment to scheduling the independent evaluator to submitting your certification paperwork.
When Is the Next Lottery?

When does the next Louisiana Fortify Homes Program lottery open? As of July 2026, the Louisiana Department of Insurance states that lottery registration is closed and additional grant rounds will be announced at a later date. There is no published date for the next round. Homeowners can sign up for official program announcements directly at ldi.la.gov to be notified when registration reopens. Acadiana Roof Restoration LLC is an IBHS FORTIFIED certified contractor and can prepare your roof assessment before the next round opens.

Here is the sequence:
Step 1: Schedule a free forensic roof inspection with Acadiana Roof Restoration. We will tell you the honest condition of your roof and whether a FORTIFIED upgrade makes financial sense for your specific situation.
Step 2: Get a quote for your FORTIFIED installation so you know your exact out-of-pocket cost after the grant.
Step 3: When a new lottery window opens, enter with a certified contractor already lined up. Grant winners who cannot find a certified contractor in time lose their grant.
Step 4: Complete your installation, pass the independent inspection, receive your IBHS FORTIFIED certificate, and submit it to your insurance carrier to start collecting your discount.
The homeowners who move now will be first in line when the next window opens. The ones who wait until the lottery is announced will scramble to find a certified contractor.
The Bottom Line
Louisiana just made the biggest commitment to FORTIFIED roofing in the state's history. Lafayette Parish is newly eligible. The insurance discounts are mandatory. The grants are real. The tax credits exist.
The only question is whether you are going to take advantage of this or let your neighbor beat you to it.
