Roofing Contractor Credentials Louisiana: What Actually Matters
Roofing Contractor Credentials in Louisiana: What They Mean and Which Ones Actually Matter
When you search for a roofing contractor in Lafayette or anywhere in Acadiana, you will find companies listing designations like GAF Master Elite, Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, and CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster. These sound impressive. Understanding what they actually certify, and what they do not, will change how you evaluate any contractor you consider hiring.
This guide explains every major roofing credential category, what each one requires to earn, and what it tells you (and does not tell you) about a contractor's ability to protect your home in Louisiana's hurricane environment.
Manufacturer Program Designations
Most of the credentials you see advertised by roofing contractors fall into this category. They are awarded by shingle and roofing material manufacturers, not by independent engineering organizations.
GAF Master Elite
GAF is one of the largest roofing shingle manufacturers in the United States. GAF Master Elite is their top contractor designation. To earn it, contractors must be properly licensed in their state, carry adequate liability insurance and workers' compensation, maintain a positive reputation with the Better Business Bureau or similar organizations, and complete training on GAF products and warranties.
GAF Master Elite contractors can offer GAF's enhanced warranty products, including their System Plus and Golden Pledge warranties, which extend coverage on labor and materials beyond standard manufacturer warranties.
What GAF Master Elite does not certify: installation methodology beyond GAF's product installation requirements, wind resistance performance to any independent engineering standard, or third-party inspection of completed work. It is a sales and business credibility program. Earning it demonstrates that a contractor is legitimate and invests in product training. It does not demonstrate that a contractor can install a roof that qualifies for Louisiana's mandatory insurance discounts or that is engineered to resist hurricane-force wind.
Owens Corning Preferred Contractor
Owens Corning is another major shingle manufacturer. Their Preferred Contractor designation operates similarly to GAF Master Elite: contractors must be licensed, insured, and trained on Owens Corning products and installation methods. Preferred Contractors can offer Owens Corning's enhanced warranty coverage.
The same limits apply: Owens Corning Preferred certification does not qualify a roof for IBHS FORTIFIED designation, does not affect Louisiana insurance discounts under Act 533, and does not involve independent third-party inspection of installation quality.
CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster
CertainTeed is a third major shingle manufacturer with a tiered contractor program. SELECT ShingleMaster is their highest designation, requiring training, certification testing on CertainTeed products, and business credibility verification. SELECT ShingleMasters can offer CertainTeed's SureStart PLUS extended warranty coverage.
Again, this is a manufacturer program. CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster does not confer IBHS FORTIFIED certification or qualify a contractor to install roofs eligible for Louisiana's mandatory wind premium discounts.
Why Manufacturer Programs Exist and What They Actually Measure
Manufacturer programs exist for two legitimate purposes: they create a network of contractors trained to install the manufacturer's products correctly, and they give contractors a competitive marketing differentiator.
Both purposes benefit the manufacturer and can benefit homeowners: a GAF Master Elite contractor has demonstrated they install GAF shingles properly and that GAF stands behind their work with enhanced warranty terms.
What these programs do not measure is wind resistance performance. Shingle manufacturers test their products to ASTM standards that establish baseline performance. Those standards are not the same as IBHS FORTIFIED engineering requirements, and achieving a manufacturer designation does not mean a contractor builds to a higher wind resistance standard.
In Louisiana, where hurricane-force winds can exceed 130 MPH and where roof failure is the primary driver of catastrophic interior water damage, this distinction is not academic. It is the difference between a roof that qualifies for a mandatory insurance discount and one that does not. It is the difference between a roof that keeps water out of your home during a direct hit and one that may not.
Independent Engineering and Inspection Credentials
This category includes credentials awarded by organizations with no financial stake in which products a contractor installs. They certify knowledge of engineering standards, inspection methodology, or installation techniques validated by post-disaster research.
IBHS FORTIFIED Certified Contractor
The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety is an independent nonprofit funded by the insurance industry to research and reduce property losses from natural disasters. IBHS developed the FORTIFIED construction standard by studying what actually failed, and what did not, in hurricanes and severe wind events across the Gulf Coast and Southeast.
IBHS FORTIFIED certification for contractors requires demonstrated knowledge of the FORTIFIED installation standard: sealed deck construction with fully adhered underlayment, ring-shank nail attachment at specified spacing, reinforced drip edge, and for Silver and Gold levels, opening protection and structural connection requirements.
Critically, every FORTIFIED installation must be inspected by an independent IBHS-certified evaluator who photographs the work from bare deck through completion. The evaluator submits documentation to IBHS, which reviews it and issues the designation certificate. The contractor cannot self-certify. The homeowner receives an IBHS FORTIFIED certificate that is recognized by every admitted insurance carrier in Louisiana.
Under Act 533 and Regulation 136, Louisiana law requires admitted insurers to discount wind and hurricane premiums when a homeowner submits a valid IBHS FORTIFIED certificate. The discount reaches up to 29% in South Louisiana for FORTIFIED Roof, up to 43% for Silver, and up to 49% for Gold. No manufacturer designation triggers this discount. Only IBHS FORTIFIED certification does.
NRCIA Forensic Roof Inspector
The National Roof Certification and Inspection Agency trains and certifies inspectors to document roof condition and storm damage to the HAAG Engineering standard. HAAG Engineering developed the methodology that insurance companies use to train their own adjusters. A NRCIA Forensic Roof Inspector uses the same documentation protocols, the same damage classification criteria, and the same evidentiary standards.
This credential matters to Louisiana homeowners in two situations. First, when a roof assessment is needed to determine whether an existing roof qualifies for restoration versus replacement: a forensic inspection gives an objective, defensible answer. Second, when storm damage has occurred and a homeowner needs documentation that carries weight with an insurance adjuster: a NRCIA Forensic Inspection report written to HAAG standards does exactly that.
No manufacturer program trains contractors to perform forensic inspections or to document damage in a format recognized by insurance adjusters.
Roof Maxx 5-Star Dealer
Roof Maxx Technologies authorizes dealers to apply the USDA-certified bio-based Roof Maxx treatment through a tiered dealer program. A 5-Star designation, the highest tier, is awarded based on training completion, installation volume, customer satisfaction, and adherence to application protocols.
Roof Maxx is not a product available through roofing supply distributors. The dealer authorization program controls quality and application standards. Louisiana currently has one 5-Star Roof Maxx dealer: Acadiana Roof Restoration LLC.
The Credential Stack That Matters in Louisiana
For a Louisiana homeowner evaluating roofing contractors, the credential hierarchy looks like this:
- IBHS FORTIFIED certification determines whether your new roof qualifies for Louisiana's mandatory insurance discounts. If you are replacing a roof, this is the credential that most directly affects your long-term cost of ownership.
- NRCIA Forensic Inspector certification determines whether your contractor can give you an objective, insurance-grade assessment of your existing roof's condition and of any storm damage you need documented.
- Manufacturer program designations demonstrate business credibility and product training. They are a positive signal about contractor legitimacy. They do not affect FORTIFIED eligibility or insurance discounts.
A contractor with GAF Master Elite but no IBHS FORTIFIED certification can install a roof that looks identical to a FORTIFIED roof. That roof will not earn a Louisiana insurance discount. It will not carry an IBHS FORTIFIED certificate. And if it is ever challenged in an insurance dispute, there is no independent third-party documentation of how it was built.
Acadiana Roof Restoration LLC's Credential Stack

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a GAF Master Elite roofing contractor?
GAF Master Elite is a contractor designation awarded by GAF, one of the largest shingle manufacturers in the United States. To earn it, contractors must be properly licensed, carry adequate insurance, maintain a good reputation, and commit to ongoing training in GAF products. It is a manufacturer sales program: it recognizes contractors who install GAF shingles and meet GAF's business standards. It does not certify installation methods, wind resistance performance, or independent inspection of completed work.
What is an Owens Corning Preferred contractor?
Owens Corning Preferred is a tiered contractor designation from Owens Corning, another major shingle manufacturer. Like GAF Master Elite, it requires licensing, insurance, and training in Owens Corning products. It is a manufacturer program that recognizes contractors who sell and install Owens Corning shingles. It does not involve independent third-party inspection of installation quality or wind resistance performance.
What is an IBHS FORTIFIED certified contractor?
An IBHS FORTIFIED certified contractor is trained and authorized by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, an independent nonprofit research organization, to install roofs to the FORTIFIED engineering standard. FORTIFIED certification is not awarded for selling a manufacturer's products. It is awarded for demonstrated knowledge of a specific installation methodology that has been validated through post-hurricane damage studies. Every FORTIFIED installation must be inspected by an independent third-party evaluator. Acadiana Roof Restoration LLC is a certified IBHS FORTIFIED contractor serving Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, Houma, and all of Acadiana.
What is a NRCIA Forensic Roof Inspector?
A NRCIA Forensic Roof Inspector is certified by the National Roof Certification and Inspection Agency to document roof damage and condition to the HAAG Engineering standard: the same methodology used by insurance company adjusters. This credential is relevant when a homeowner needs an independent assessment of storm damage, a dispute with an insurance adjuster, or an objective evaluation of a roof's remaining life. It has no manufacturer affiliation. Jason Lopez of Acadiana Roof Restoration LLC is a NRCIA Forensic Roof Inspector.
Which roofing credentials matter most in Louisiana?
For Louisiana homeowners, IBHS FORTIFIED certification matters most because it directly determines whether your roof qualifies for mandatory insurance premium discounts under Act 533 and Regulation 136, and whether it is built to resist hurricane-force wind. NRCIA Forensic Inspector certification matters for post-storm claims and insurance disputes. Manufacturer program designations like GAF Master Elite and Owens Corning Preferred indicate business credibility and product training but do not affect insurance discounts, FORTIFIED eligibility, or wind resistance performance.
What credentials does Acadiana Roof Restoration LLC hold?
Acadiana Roof Restoration LLC holds IBHS FORTIFIED certification (authorized to install FORTIFIED Roof, Silver, and Gold), NRCIA Forensic Roof Inspector certification (Jason Lopez), and is Louisiana's only 5-Star Roof Maxx dealer. The company is also BBB A+ rated and is a Veteran-Owned Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business. Call 337-999-7663 for a free assessment.
