Lafayette Parish FORTIFIED Roof Grant: Eligibility and How to Apply
By Jason Lopez, Owner, Acadiana Roof Restoration LLC | IBHS FORTIFIED Certified Contractor | NRCIA Forensic Roof Inspector | BBB A+ | Veteran-Owned
Lafayette Parish homeowners can qualify for up to 10,000 dollars toward a FORTIFIED roof through the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program. This guide covers who is eligible, how the grant works, why the order of steps matters, and what to do right now while registration is closed.
Is Lafayette Parish Eligible?
Yes. Lafayette Parish was included in the most recent Louisiana Fortify Homes Program eligible parish list, alongside Acadia, Vermilion, St. Martin, Iberia, and the broader south Louisiana region. The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program (LFHP) is administered by the Louisiana Department of Insurance and awards grants of up to 10,000 dollars to upgrade a roof to the IBHS FORTIFIED Roof standard. Funds are limited to construction costs and are paid directly to the contractor.
How Selection Works
Selection is by lottery. It is not first-come, first-served, and it is not income-based. Every eligible homeowner who registers during an open window has the same chance.
Current status, per the Louisiana Department of Insurance: "Lottery registration is closed and additional grant rounds will be announced at a later date."
There is no published date for the next round. Get on the official notification list at ldi.la.gov/subscriptions/louisiana-fortify-homes-program-subscribe so you hear it from the state rather than from a contractor. LFHP status last verified July 21, 2026. Confirm at ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes or call the program at (225) 342-0111.
Eligibility Requirements
Primary residence only, homestead exemption required. Active wind and hail coverage required. Flood policy required if the property sits in a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area. New construction, condominiums, and mobile homes are not eligible. Partial roof repairs are not fundable. The entire contiguous roof covering must be replaced.
The Order of Steps Matters, Read This First
Selecting a contractor or beginning work before LFHP approval voids your eligibility. Approval comes first. Work comes second. Any contractor who tells you to sign now and sort the grant out later is costing you up to 10,000 dollars.
If you have an application pending, the correct time to sign with a contractor is after your approval comes through. That single question, when should I sign, separates the contractors who work with this program from the ones who only talk about it.
While You Wait: The Discount Is Not a Lottery
The grant is a lottery, but the insurance savings are not. A FORTIFIED roof qualifies for two separate savings tracks regardless of whether you ever win a grant.
Act 533 voluntary carrier discounts, up to the following levels with select carriers: Liberty Mutual and Safeco up to 40 percent, USAA up to 37 percent, State Farm up to 35 percent, Allstate up to 30 percent. Actual discounts vary by carrier, policy, and property. Confirm with your agent.
Louisiana Regulation 136 mandatory benchmark, separate from the carrier discounts: a base FORTIFIED Roof in south Louisiana earns a 29 percent discount on the hurricane portion of the premium, within a statewide range of 16 to 49 percent, for policies issued on or after January 1, 2027.
Why FORTIFIED Matters in Lafayette
FORTIFIED is an IBHS construction standard, not a brand or a product. A base FORTIFIED Roof requires a sealed roof deck, enhanced ring-shank nail attachment, reinforced hip and ridge caps, and FORTIFIED specification edge detailing. Every designation is verified by an independent IBHS certified Evaluator, not by the contractor, which is exactly why an insurance carrier accepts the certificate. Certificates run five years and transfer on sale.
