The Damage Is Happening Where You Never Look

On a July afternoon in Lafayette, the air outside is 95 degrees. Inside an under-ventilated attic, it is past 140.

That heat does not sit still. It radiates down through your insulation and into your living space, so your air conditioner runs longer to hold 72. It bakes the ductwork carrying the cold air you are paying for. And it works on your shingles from below, drying the asphalt binder out of them years faster than the manufacturer ever planned for.

What a Solar Attic Fan Actually Does

It moves the hot air out and lets cooler air in. That is the whole mechanism, and it is the reason it works.

Cool air enters low through your soffit vents. Hot air exhausts high. A passive turbine only moves air when the wind decides to blow. A solar attic fan moves air whenever the sun is out, which in South Louisiana is exactly when the attic is at its worst.

The Attic Depot 30-watt unit we install runs entirely on its own solar panel. No electrician. No wiring into your panel. No meter running. It switches itself on at 85 degrees and off at 70, and a separate humidity sensor brings it on at 75 percent humidity and off at 60 percent, so it works your moisture problem in the winter too, not just your heat problem in the summer.

What that changes

A cooler house. Less heat pushing down through the ceiling means the AC cycles less to hold the same temperature.

A lower bill. Your air conditioner is the largest electrical load in your home. Anything that makes it run less shows up on the statement.

Longer shingle life. Asphalt shingles age from heat and UV. Take the heat load off the underside of the deck and you slow the clock down.

How many does a house need

It depends on your attic square footage and the height at the center of the attic. Most Acadiana homes need one or two. Larger homes with tall attic volume need three or four. We size it during the assessment and tell you the number. We do not sell you a fan you do not need, for the same reason we will tell you your roof does not need replacing when it does not: we make money either way, so the honest answer is the only one worth giving you.

Why Have Your Roofer Install It

A solar attic fan is a hole cut in your roof. That is worth saying plainly.

Whoever installs it is cutting through your deck, your underlayment and your shingles, and then sealing that penetration against wind driven rain in a state that gets named storms. Done wrong, you have traded an attic heat problem for a leak directly over your insulation.

We also look at the whole system, not just the fan. Exhaust without intake does not ventilate anything. If your soffit vents are painted shut or blocked with insulation, a fan will pull conditioned air out of your house instead of hot air out of your attic, and your bill goes up instead of down. We check the intake side before we quote the exhaust side.
