FORTIFIED Shield Package
Home insurance premiums across Acadiana climbed sharply after hurricanes Laura, Delta and Ida. An IBHS FORTIFIED roof designation is the most direct way for a Louisiana homeowner to bring that premium back down. Acadiana Roof Restoration LLC is an IBHS FORTIFIED certified contractor serving Lafayette, Baton Rouge and South Louisiana, and we handle the entire designation process for you.
What an IBHS FORTIFIED roof is
IBHS is the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, an independent nonprofit research organization funded by the insurance industry. Its FORTIFIED program sets construction standards that go beyond the Louisiana building code, specifically to resist hurricane force winds, hail and wind driven rain.
A FORTIFIED roof differs from a code minimum roof in four main ways: the roof deck is attached with ring-shank nails rather than smooth nails, the deck is fully sealed to create a secondary water barrier, edge protection is wider and sealed, and roof mounted vents must be rated to resist wind driven rain.
The insurance discount, stated accurately
Today, FORTIFIED discounts in Louisiana are offered voluntarily and the amount varies by carrier. Several major insurers offer substantial reductions for a designated roof.
That changes on January 1, 2027. Louisiana Regulation 136 makes the discount mandatory, requiring insurers to reduce the hurricane portion of your premium by 16 to 49 percent when your home carries a certified FORTIFIED roof.
A roof designated now earns whatever voluntary discount your carrier offers today, and locks in the mandatory discount the moment Regulation 136 takes effect. Actual savings depend on your carrier, your policy and your location, and we verify your specific situation during the free assessment rather than quoting you a number we cannot stand behind.
The three FORTIFIED designation levels
FORTIFIED Roof. Enhanced roof deck attachment, a sealed roof deck acting as a secondary water barrier, sealed or impact resistant shingles, and reinforced roof to wall connections. This is the right entry point for most homeowners.
FORTIFIED Silver. Everything in FORTIFIED Roof, plus reinforced walls and wall to foundation connections and enhanced protection for windows and doors.
FORTIFIED Gold. Everything in Silver, plus a complete continuous load path from roof to foundation. The highest level of storm resistance and the largest available discount, recommended for coastal and high wind locations.
During your free assessment we determine which level your home is eligible for and which one actually returns the most for what it costs.
Our five step process
- Free forensic roof inspection. An NRCIA credentialed Forensic Roof Inspector examines your existing roof, documents its condition, assesses storm damage and determines your FORTIFIED eligibility.
- Eligibility report within 48 hours. A written report showing which designation level you qualify for, estimated savings at each level, and our recommendation with the cost against the savings so you can decide for yourself.
- Certified installation. We install to the FORTIFIED standard using approved materials and methods, documenting every component with photographs and measurements as the standard requires, because an independent evaluator verifies the work.
- Documentation and designation submission. We compile and submit the required documentation for your official designation certificate. You do not fill out a single form.
- Insurance filing support. We give you everything your insurer needs to apply the discount, and if your carrier delays or pushes back we help you work through it.
The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program grant
The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program provides state grant funding of up to 10,000 dollars toward upgrading a roof to the FORTIFIED standard, and Lafayette Parish is an eligible parish.
Lottery registration is currently closed and the Louisiana Department of Insurance has not published a date for the next round. Homeowners can sign up for official announcements at ldi.la.gov. We can complete your roof assessment now so you are ready when registration reopens rather than starting from zero.
Why the contractor matters for FORTIFIED
A FORTIFIED designation must be installed by a contractor who understands the standard and documented for an independent evaluator who verifies it. Most roofing contractors in Acadiana are not FORTIFIED certified. If the documentation is wrong, the designation does not issue, and the discount does not follow.
We are an IBHS FORTIFIED certified contractor, an NRCIA credentialed Forensic Roof Inspector, and Louisiana's only 5-Star Roof Maxx dealer. That last credential matters here for an unexpected reason: it means we can tell you honestly when your existing roof does not need replacing at all.
Optional upgrade, solar attic ventilation
A new roof is the one moment when getting the attic right costs almost nothing extra. The deck is open, the crew is on site and the ventilation plan is being set anyway.
We are an authorized Attic Depot dealer and install 30-watt solar attic fans that run entirely on their own solar panel, with no wiring and no operating cost. The fan switches on at 85 degrees and off at 70, and a humidity sensor runs it at 75 percent humidity to keep the attic dry through winter. A cooler attic protects the roof you just paid for, because heat is what dries the asphalt binder out of shingles from underneath.
Ventilation on a FORTIFIED designated roof is reviewed by your independent FORTIFIED evaluator. We walk you through exactly how the ventilation on your roof will be documented before any work begins, so nothing puts your designation or your discount at risk.
